Hello, I’m Dr Tan

As a reproductive surgeon , fertility specialist , and board-certified gynaecologist (and importantly, a mum), I appreciate how unique everyone’s journey to parenthood is.

My approach blends expertise with the art of listening, empowering you to take control of your reproductive health through every stage of life.

I’m passionate about patient care in all areas of women’s reproductive health, with a special interest in period disorders, pelvic pain, abnormal bleeding, and challenges with conception.

I hold a Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from Monash University in Melbourne and a Master of Reproductive Medicine from the University of New South Wales.

I’m a fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologist and have undertaken additional fellowship training in advanced laparoscopic and reproductive surgery.

A Safe Space for Your Fertility Concerns

Having gone through my own fertility journey, I know first-hand how overwhelming it can be - especially when it feels like you’re facing it alone.

Fertility Services

From testing to treatment, I provide all-encompassing support and expertise.

  • I work with a range of testing and diagnostic services that look at the full picture of your fertility or gynaecological concerns. From there, we can map out a comprehensive, personalised plan.

    • Egg Freezing (social): Typically offered to women under 38 years of age, social egg freezing lets women preserve eggs for a longer reproductive window.

    • Egg Freezing (medical): For women about to undergo cancer treatments, this helps them preserve healthy eggs.

    • Embryo Freezing: You won’t use every embryo from your IVF cycle right away. This lets us freeze some to use for a later cycle.

    • Sperm Freezing: For men about to undergo cancer treatments, this helps them preserve healthy sperm.

    • IVF: With this fertility treatment, we combine both partner’s eggs outside the body to form embryos. It can be a long process, but I’ll support you closely throughout.

    • IUI: This skips a few steps to place sperm directly in the uterus when you ovulate. IUI is often the first move to treat infertility, depending on your personalised plan.

    • Ovulation Induction: If we pinpoint irregular or infrequent periods as a cause of infertility, this treatment stimulates regular cycles with tablets or hormone injections.

    • Ovulation Tracking: With simple blood or ultrasound tests, we can understand your ‘fertile window’ (i.e. when you’re most likely to fall pregnant) so that you can time intercourse better.

    • Reproductive Surgery: This looks like any surgery done to restore or maintain fertility (of which there are a few.) I’ll make sure we explore both surgical and non-surgical options in your treatment.

Genetic Carrier Screening: A test that scans parents' blood to see the likelihood of passing a genetic condition onto a potential little one. This helps you make an informed decision about your family.

    • Preimplantation Genetic Testing: This checks embryos for certain genetic conditions or chromosome problems before they are implanted during IVF. If anything arises, we’ll navigate it together.

Gynaecology Services

My passion for women’s health also led me to become a board-certified gynaecologist. I offer non-surgical and surgical treatment options and specialise in minimally invasive keyhole surgeries that help you get back on your feet sooner.

I address problems like abnormal periods, pelvic pain, endometriosis, polyps and fibroids, ovarian cysts, prolapse, hysterectomy, contraception advice and fittings, and pre-cancer of the uterus or cervix.

FAQs

  • Choosing the right specialist starts with finding someone with solid expertise and experience across reproductive health. It’s important to feel comfortable and supported, so look for a specialist whose approach aligns with your values and who listens to your concerns.

  • The costs of fertility treatments can vary based on what you need and the approach we take. I’ll make sure to discuss all the financial aspects with you openly, so you understand the potential expenses and options available.

  • The success rates of fertility treatments depend on the treatment type and what it's for. For instance, the pregnancy rate:

    • Doubles after surgery for endometriosis.

    • Sits at 10-20% with IUI (depending on the reason for IUI).

    • Doubles after hysteroscopy and removal of endometrial polyps.

    • After IVF is 35% per embryo and 50% per IVF cycle altogether.

  • The length of the fertility treatment process varies, but as a guide:

    • Hysteroscopy (including office hysteroscopy) takes 20 minutes.

    • Laparoscopy can take many hours, depending on the surgery required.

    • IVF process takes 2-3 weeks.

    • IUI takes 2 weeks.

    • Ovulation induction takes 2 weeks.

  • Like any medical procedure, fertility treatments come with potential risks and side effects. I’ll be transparent about these risks and how we manage them, ensuring you feel informed and supported every step of the way. Your safety and comfort are my top priorities.

  • In your initial appointment, we’ll deep dive into your fertility history, goals, and treatment options to conceive. I’ll listen to any concerns, answer all your questions, and work with you to create a personalised plan.
